Hello again, I know I just posted not long ago. I promise this will be the last post for at least another two months. My dreads are about three weeks old and I just got home from Florida with the family! It was so nice and warm and breezy, then today I had to come home to the freezing cold Michigan =[ but anyways, I just wanted to post some pictures. My dreads on the back of my head are so tight at the ends its crazy, and some kinda feel like the are loosing up, but all in all the progress is going very very well. My family does not hate them either! I was scared what they where going to say, (because I didn't tell them) but most of them didn't say anything about it, and the ones that did just said, well thats different! so I am happy that they are not against my decision to get dreads!

Subject:It Seems Quite Fitting.
Security:Public

As I'm eighteen and out of the house, I've been heavily considering getting three different literary tattoos. I'm an avid reader, a writer (officially since Nanowrimo of this year), and a future English teacher, so it seems quite fitting to get literary tattoos to honor those few in my life who I love dearly.

The first might not be authentically literary as it's technically from a film adaptation of a book. It's from the Mara Wilson and Danny DeVito version of Roald Dahl's Matilda. I rather liked the scene in which she sits in her room, tearfully reading books, as the narrator reminds us with books "you are not alone." The phrase stuck with me until, eventually, I didn't feel alone anymore. The characters both in what I read and write, as well as he real life characters who mean so much to be have driven the loneliness back. It's also from God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, a Kurt Vonnegut novel I analyzed to write my junior thesis on the absurdist author. He wrote:

"Still and all, why bother? Here's my answer. Many people need desperately to receive this message: I feel and think much as you do, care about many of the things you care about, although most people do not care about them. You are not alone."

As I'm not so good with linking, I'll just direct you here for the font I like: www.dafont.com/oldnewspapertypes.font

The second tattoo:

- "And in that moment, I swear we were infinite." From The Perks of Being a Wallfower" Likely it will just be "I swear we were infinite" or just "infinite" and I have no idea where yet. It will likely be in a similar font as the one above. This is for a good friend who will likely have severe reservations about my getting of a tattoo in regards to him. But that's quite alright.

The third:
-"I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz,
or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul
"

From Pablo Neruda's "Sonnet 17". Likely it will just be the last two lines or less, situated low on my left hip with a drippy lit candle in a candle-holder. This is for a certain special someone.

I like this font, but it seems a bit too messy to age well: www.dafont.com/levibrush.font

Thank you for reading. If any of your could find a more whimsical font for "infinite" that would be great. One that's still legible, of course. =)

I'm looking for someone (preferably downtown) who can repair the thread of a camera lens (ie the part you screw other things onto, like filters)
I have a 52mm lens with a dent in the edge.

If you know of anywhere that does any camera repair, please let me know, I can call them and find out specifics myself.

Thanks so much.

we've had a lovely vacation so far. for xmas i got up early to spend hours photographing the new [info]luciferins colors i just released, then made celery-pear juice (one of my favorites). midday, joe & i cooked. no major menu, but he did pick up a fifteen pound, free-range, organic hippie turkey which we roasted with rosemary, sage, fresh thyme & garlic under its skin, & filled with a sort of offhanded, recipeless celery, pearl onion, & mushroom stuffing. (it was set to include pomegranate seeds, but we totally forgot.) i also made an enormous pot of russet/carnival/delicata squashtatoes, & of course had homemade cranberry sauce with it. we then ate & watched a fucking incredible movie, "eating out: all you can eat". (don't watch it if you live near me & i like you, because it's totally showing at my next movie night.) the freezer is now stocked with sandwich-sized foil packets of delicious turkey which joe painstakingly stripped from the bones.

so on to OUR ANNIVERSARY. it's anniversary round three, & full_week+_off_work_together round four. joe & i don't do xmas presents, but we definitely do anniversary presents. in the past he's taken me to a bed & breakfast & to uber-fancy dinner, but he opted to start torturing me this year as i have him. i guess his latest birthday inspired him to new ends, as he'd displayed my present, wrapped, out on top of the tv for several days. i, of course, had immediately wrapped & displayed his similarly. he gave me permission to sniff his; i allowed him to listen to mine; & we each gave each other one instance of hefting.

early on the 26th we went & saw avatar in imax 3d. best movie of the year & we're going again this week. after that we went back to union. we split an appetizer of potato gnocchi with stewed rabbit (the gnocchi were fantastic but looked uh... interesting. i therefore told the waiter, "the larvae were delicious," which he laughed at), then joe ordered the medium-rare duck breast with roasted chesnuts & golden raisins; i had pork cheeks with brussels sprouts, miniature carrots, & parsnip puree. looooove their brussels sprouts, they're tiny & totally sweet like they should be.

the bus took forever to get us home, but then it was time. as mine for him was more of a to-do, he went first. the long, side-heavy box ended up being a bottle of cologne - totally outside either of our comfort zones, as i've NEVER worn perfume. however, it's a scent that i like & have complimented on a girl we both know, & joe said it "turns his head" every time he catches it on the air, so we'll see if it does the same thing to him on me.

as for my present to him...

about four years ago, joe's first suspension was filmed for a british documentary on body modification. he never had a chance to see the result, but figured they didn't use much of his footage because he didn't do anything "spectacular" - just went up, hung, didn't want to be swung around, & came back down.

in early october of this year, i received an email from my friend [info]icemem: Does Joe happen to be in a film called The Human Canvas? One of my best friends here in town (an artist who deals with extremes of body image) has been showing it to her friends all over the place for the last year and I've only just found out about it, if he is, that would be a -really- weird coincidence.

of course i knew immediately what that was, & jumped on him to send me a copy. he didn't have to - it's on YOUTUBE. & it was put there by the guy who actually made the documentary. so i emailed him via youtube, & he was happy to send a real copy, albeit in PAL.

unfortunately, i couldn't convert the PAL dvd in my computer or any of [info]sic737's, & it also wouldn't play in my "i will play all of your burns & avis & mpgs & even some movs, & also i have proven my ability to play PAL before" philips dvd player either, so i ended up ripping the youtube version & burning that to a disc that even our sony dvd player likes. it looks decent enough, & i figured i'd give him the PAL disc too, & he can try his compudork friends' computers.

so i made him fetch his present from the tv & unwrap several layers of bullshit to get to it. i had wrapped the dvd itself, then stuck it in a magazine & wrapped that, then shoved the magazine into airpack bubbles & wrapped that, then stuffed the whole mess into a box & wrapped THAT. (it was very cute when he thought the magazine was some sort of fancy book from italy because there was a dior ad on the back.) the disc i burned just said "happy third anniversary" or some shit, so even when his present was in his hands he didn't know what it was.

he didn't identify it immediately either, thinking i just got him some bodymod documentary... until he started to recognize the voiceover. he asked, "you found it?" a bit incredulously. i nodded & forwarded to his part, which is a full 7-8 minutes or so & even spans a commercial break. it was pretty great to watch him watch himself - especially since he's lamented often that he barely has any recordings of his hook work - just one pic of his faceframe (five facial hooks tied to a huge picture frame) & some poor non-flash stuff i & others have taken.

so it's sort of funny - i'd initially allowed him to listen to my present, which he eventually did; he had let me sniff his, which made sense at the end. anyhow, here's the youtube link for the documentary. joe's part starts around 40 minutes for anyone interested in seeing spacey, freshly-hung thok.

& just like last year, i also compiled another montage of webcam shots of us. again, edited for public consumption; again, they're all pretty well worksafe. :)

Subject:looking for a good bank to deal with...
Security:Public

i'm about at my wits END with CIBC and their fees and limits and overall shitty service! i've had nothing but problems with them since i opened my account with them in the summer.

i apologize if this isn't entirely appropriate for the community, but i was hoping to get some opinions.
who do you bank with?
i'm looking for a no fee, or low fee, bank to get a chequing account with. i have a visa with CIBC that is maxed out, but i expect to have it payed off in the coming months, at which point i want to switch banks entirely, cancelling that visa and closing my chequing account at CIBC.
i've heard good things about BMO and Scotia, but i'm leaning more towards a credit union, and would like personal experiences.
I'll be a student in the fall, so for now, student accounts are out of the question, but i would like to deal with a bank that offers student accounts (as they are usually no fee) so that i can switch to one when i become a student.
can anyone help me out here?
thanks in advance for anything you guys can give me!

So I'm planning on getting my third literary tattoo in January. I have three planned, but I simply cannot decide which one I want to get. Perhaps you all could tell me which one you like bestttt?

First, A Lord of the Rings idea. My dad got me into LOTR forever ago, and I fell in love. Hahah. But long story short, I want to get the quote:

Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens

across my back. The reason behind this one is because my family and I have been through SO MUCH in the past two years. Like, people actually cry when I tell them our story. But throughout all of this, I have maintained my faith in God. It has been a hard road sometimes, and I've been upset with him, but in the end, I always come to him.

Second, a Twilight tattoo. Now, I know I'll probably get a lot of flack for this one, but I personally think they're amazing books, errors and all. I want to get the quote:

Carlisle was right

on top of my left foot. The reasoning behind this is once again religious, and if you want me to explain, I will. It's one of my favorite ideas, but it's kind of diluted. Anywho...

Third idea is from an EE Cummings poem. anyone lived in a pretty how town was the first Cummings poem I read, and I loved it so much. I re read it all the time, and each time I fall in love with it over and over. But my favorite line from this poem is:

down they forgot as up they grew

I love this line, because it shows that as we get older, we lose our innocence, and our sense of wonder. If you've read the poem, you know what this line means, and it's really hard to give a full explanation without launching into a full fledged poem analysis. haha.

So, thoughts?

The results of the poll on what to lj-cut or not are in! Well, they've been in for a while, but I kept forgetting to post about them!

First of all, about 93% of people agreed commercial posts should be lj-cut. Therefore, this rule will not change.
What will very slightly change is what is considered commercial.
The majority of voters have decided that posts where people are trying to sell something for profit are to be lj-cut, as before. The slight change will be that a post where someone is attempting to publicize a product, whether for profit, or not will also need to be lj-cut.

I'll be changing the community rules shortly to reflect this.

Happy Holidays!

Subject:FINALLY EIGHTEEN!
Security:Public
Mood: lazy
Music:Killer Queen- Queen

I'm finally turning 18 on Tuesday. I've crept on this community for a good two years and all the while thinking about what I want.
I've pretty much decided on this:

For whatever we lose (like a you or a me)
it's always ourselves we find in the sea

- E. E Cummings

I would love to get this because I live in a town called Manchester- by the- SEA, and I want to return after college- it kind of reminds me where I'm from, and who's waiting for me. Maggie, Molly, Milly and May is also the first E.E Cummings' poem I read, and now I own three of his books, and read a poem a night. (my favorite being Somewhere I've Never Traveled)

My questions to you experts are:
  • Where do you think I should get it? I'm between upper back and below the elbow on my left arm.
  • How much do you estimate it would cost?
  • If I should get anything else with it (might as well get my moneys worth... ) I was thinking a small starfish, shell, or boat.
  • And finally, where does one find fonts?
Thanks for your help in advance!
I hope you all have a great new year!

Mood: optimistic

Hi all~

Long time member/lurker, haven't posted in a whiiiiiilee.. Anyways, next month my dreadies will be 7 years old.....say what? yah, 7 years old. I love them dearly, but I am feeling as though the hair at my roots/scalp could be a little thicker to hold the weight of my babies. My friend at the beauty shop next to my work suggested this product called Nioxin, and I am on Treatment 2 for thinning hair. I used it(once) so far. Has anyone heard of or used Nioxin? Any experiences with shampoos designed to make hair thicker or fuller? I have been wanting to thicken my hair for a couple years now as that was when I started noticing the thinning. I have tried different shampoos with no real results, the latest was Jon Frieda's "Root Awakening" and didn't see any results at all. I use rosemary oil and that does help and I loooooooove the intense tingle.

So, I know that there have been discussions in the memories on thinning hair but I dunno, I just haven't seen the answers that I need. I know that some of my perceived thinness is due to the fact that I have wide sections but I still want thicker, fuller roots.

And how many of you use conditioner on a regular basis? In the past 7 years I have maybe used conditioner 3 times?? Perhaps using conditioner might strengthen my hair? I have just been doing the basic old wash and simple maintenance over the years but now it's time to get serious and make sure my hair is thick and healthy! Any info, advice, suggestions?

much love and blessings
~amanda~

Subject:Dreads vs Locs
Security:Public

So I'm beginning to give serious thought to trading in my dreads for locs.

I've been admiring the thinner style of locs for some time, but the only thing really putting me off is the regular maintenance that goes into them....twisting, and re-twisting, and especially the practice of applying product to the hair to help it stick.

So I'm looking for a dialogue here...dreads? Locs? Pros and cons of both.

EDIT: thanks to [info]lishd for bringing to my attention that there might be clarification needed.

Dreads-what most people think of when they think of dreads or locks, or locs....backcombed, or natural, product free, and usually simply kept clean.

Locs-in this instance, the style of thinner dreads or locs formed usually by two strand twist, twist and pin, and usually maitained by twisting the roots periodically and/or using product and heat to set the locs.

Now mind, I'm not saying these are THE definitions of either or both. If you guys have other ideas or opinions, give 'em...this is me looking for a dialogue.
